Laque & Sarai's romantic sunset proposal on the west coast of Puerto Rico

There are some proposal stories that remind me exactly why I love photographing love stories in Puerto Rico.


Laque and Sarai's proposal at Faro de Punta Higüera in Rincón, Puerto Rico was one of those moments.


From the beginning, we both agreed that we wanted the proposal to feel natural, intimate, and completely unexpected. We had been communicating for months, talking through the location, the timing, and, most importantly, how we could create a moment where Sarai would have absolutely no idea what was coming. Yet somehow, despite all the planning, the moment still unfolded in the most unexpected and beautiful way.

Planning a Surprise Proposal in Puerto Rico

When you're planning a surprise proposal, there is so much more happening behind the scenes than the couple getting engaged ever sees.

Laque and I had several conversations and meetings before the day of the proposal. We discussed the plan, the location, and how I would approach them without making Sarai suspicious.

Before they arrives we took a couple of steps to ensure everything went smoothly.

  • He sent me photos of what they would be wearing, which might sound like a small detail, but it was actually incredibly helpful. Since Sarai couldn't know who I was or why I was there, I needed to be able to recognize them as soon as they arrived.
  • Laque also shared their location with me while they were on their way, so I could keep track of their arrival and be ready for the right moment.

This kind of communication is one of the things I love about photographing surprise proposals. I'm not simply showing up with a camera. I'm part of the planning process, helping make sure the surprise actually feels like a surprise.


Why Rincón Was the Perfect Location


Laque chose Rincón, Puerto Rico because he wanted the proposal to happen during sunset, surrounded by the beauty of the island's west coast and honestly, it was a beautiful choice.

Rincón is famous for its sunsets because of its location on the western coast of Puerto Rico. As the sun begins to disappear over the horizon, the entire atmosphere changes, creating that warm, romantic light that makes sunset proposals so special.

The plan was to photograph their proposal near the beach and then continue around Faro de Punta Higüera, giving them both beautiful scenery and variety in their engagement photographs.


The Surprise Had to Look Like a Regular Photo Session

The original plan was simple: Laque would approach me and ask for a phone picture and then I would offer them a few complimentary photographs.There was one small problem. They arrived later than expected, and we were getting very close to sunset.

Since I was traveling from San Juan to Rincón, a drive that can take roughly three hours or more depending on traffic and road conditions, I knew I needed to make the most of the time we had. Thankfully, everything worked out.

I approached them and explained that I had been scheduled to photograph a family that unfortunately couldn't make it. I told them that I had traveled all the way from San Juan and didn't want to leave without photographing anyone, so I asked if they would be interested in taking a few photographs together.They agreed and just like that, the plan was in motion. Sarai had no idea she was standing inside her own proposal.

The Moment Laque Got Down on One Knee


As shown in the last pictures, I started with a few simple poses so everything would feel completely normal. Nothing suspicious, just a couple enjoying the beach.

After a few photographs, I gave them the cue Laque and I had planned. I asked them to hold hands, look into each other's eyes, and tell each other what they loved or appreciated about one another. Sarai went first and then it was Laque's turn. He began talking to her, telling her what he loved about her. At first, Sarai simply thought it was a sweet moment between the two of them. She even said something along the lines of, "You're going to make me cry. This is so cute.".... and then Laque got down on one knee.


That was the moment everything changed. Sarai immediately realized what was happening and screamed, "What the f* is happening?!"; and then came the tears. The most important question was asked and she said yes. It was one of those reactions that you simply cannot recreate. You can plan a proposal for months. You can choose the perfect location, coordinate the timing, and plan every detail; but you can't plan someone's genuine reaction when they realize the person they love is asking them to spend their life together.

That is the part I love capturing most.

A Sunset Proposal on the West Coast of Puerto Rico

After the proposal, we had a little more time to enjoy the sunset and photograph them together. The light was quickly disappearing, but instead of rushing through the experience, we embraced it. We photographed them along the beach, capturing the excitement, laughter, and emotion of being newly engaged.

They were incredibly fun and outgoing, which made the entire session feel effortless. They were present with each other and genuinely enjoying the experience instead of worrying about posing perfectly for the camera and that made such a difference.


From the Beach to Faro de Punta Higüera

After photographing them along the beach, we continued toward Faro de Punta Higüera. By this point, it was already getting dark. Yet, this is one of those moments when being prepared as a photographer really matters.

I brought flashes with me, which allowed us to continue creating beautiful portraits even after the natural light had disappeared. Instead of ending the session when the sun went down, we were able to use the lighthouse and surrounding scenery to create a completely different look for their engagement photographs. The result was a gallery that tells the story of their entire evening from the warm sunset on the beach to the more dramatic portraits around the lighthouse.

Why Flexibility Matters When Planning a Proposal


One thing this proposal reminded me of is that you can plan everything and still need to be ready to pivot. The timing changed. We had less sunlight than originally expected. The proposal itself had to happen quickly and that's okay.

A good proposal photographer should be prepared for those moments. When you're photographing a surprise proposal, you can't always control traffic, arrival times, weather, crowds, or exactly how the moment will unfold. What you can control is being prepared.

For this proposal, having a clear plan with Laque beforehand, knowing what they would be wearing, knowing where they were arriving from, and having the right lighting equipment allowed me to adapt without letting the changes take away from the experience and thankfully, we captured it all.
